What is Exterior Caulking?

Exterior caulking looks like a thick, viscous solution that is applied with a calking gun. Exterior caulking is used to seal seams in doors, windows, gutters, siding, concrete, brick, and roofing tiles in order to ensure that your home is leakproof. Filling any exterior gaps with caulking will also help to keep insects and small animals out of your home. There are several types of exterior caulking, and each needs to be reviewed based on the type of application required.

Types of Exterior Caulking: A Full Guide

While most homeowners use the term “caulking” generally without giving it a second thought, choosing the right type of caulking is key to proper application and sealing out moisture and air. There are caulking’s made for interior use and exterior use for a reason – you can’t interchange one for the other. While all types of caulking are applied in a similar manner via a caulking gun, there are many differences homeowners need to be aware of.

Silicone Caulking

Silicone caulking is ideal for non-porous surfaces, as it adheres to them very well and can last for a long time. However, silicone caulking sets very quickly and can be difficult to apply or correct mistakes. As such, if you wish to apply silicone caulking to the exterior of your home, your best bet is to hire a professional such as Ontario Certified Roofing. In addition, it’s important to note that silicone caulking cannot be painted.

Polyurethane Caulking

Polyurethane caulking is great for virtually any exterior application. However, it can also be difficult to use and is not ideal for DIY projects. Unlike silicone, polyurethane caulking can be painted to match the rest of your home’s exterior. The product can take up to 24 hours to cure, but stands up to abrasion and works well on natural products like wood. Keep in mind, however, that polyurethane caulking dries hard, which makes it a poor choice for colder weather applications.

Elastomeric or Acrylic Urethane Caulking

This type of caulking material is ideal for most exterior porous surfaces due to its adhesion properties, flexibility, and easy clean up. Professional painters often choose to work with this type of caulking because it dries very quickly and can stretch as much as 200% once cured. However, because it dries so quickly, elastomeric caulking can be difficult to apply. Luckily, at Ontario Certified Roofing, we can take care of the exterior caulking application for you!

Butyl Caulking

Butyl caulking’s are difficult to use, take a long time to dry, and have a tendency to shrink, harden, and crack relatively quickly. However, butyl caulking’s are ideal for use in eavestroughs, creating a watertight seal between the metal joints. When applied properly, this type of caulking stands up to weather and extreme temperatures.

Latex Caulking

While latex caulking tends to be more affordable than some of its counterparts, this type of caulking will harden very quickly when exposed to outside elements. This means that it will not be as durable when applied to an exterior surface and it has very little ability to expand. As such, it is not recommended for exterior applications.

Siliconized Acrylic Caulking

Siliconized acrylic caulking is the easiest one to use, which makes it incredibly popular for a wide variety of applications. The addition of silicone to the product means that it can stretch and is easier to apply and clean up as compared to its fully silicone counterpart.
