Soffits vs Fascia vs Eavestroughs: Understanding the Differences

While it’s common for homeowners to refer to soffits, fascia and eavestroughs as a unit, it can be challenging to understand the specific differences between them and how they affect the performance and longevity of the roof. These components have individual functions, but they also work together as part of the overall roofing system to protect your home.

What Are Eavestroughs?

Eavestroughs (or gutters) are trays of aluminum that span the perimeter of a home at the base of the roof line. The primary role of eavestroughs are to capture the water run-off from the roof and direct it away from the foundation of the home via the downspouts. Properly installed and functioning eavestroughs will protect your home from water infiltration, thus preventing mold growth and dangerous cracks in the foundation. To ensure your eavestroughs are working properly, it is crucial to regularly clean them and repair as needed. At Ontario Certified Roofing, we can repair your existing eavestroughs or install brand new ones to ensure that your home remains protected even under a heavy rainfall.

  • Eavestroughs protect the structural integrity of your home.
  • Eavestroughs prevent moisture build up under the roof.
  • Eavestroughs help to extend the life of your roof.
  • Properly functioning eavestroughs can add value to your property.

What is Fascia?

Fascia refers to two different types of roofing material – the fascia boards, which are the horizontal wood frames at the base of the roof line that the eavestroughs are attached to, and the fascia trim, which is the cladding (usually aluminum) that covers these boards along the rakes of the roof and adds esthetic appeal to the home’s exterior. The term itself is generally used to describe the cladding.
Fascia trim comes in vinyl, wood or aluminum material. It is highly recommended to opt for aluminum fascia because of its unparalleled durability and ease of installation. Aluminum fascia is also the standard in Simcoe County, North York Region and North Durham Region.

Benefits of Fascia

  • Fascia enhances the curb appeal of your home.
  • Fascia protects the wood framing of the roof line by creating a waterproof seal.
  • Fascia works together with the eavestroughs and soffits to protect your home from both environmental and animal damage.

What is a Soffit?

Soffits are panels that are positioned beneath the edge of the roof line and sit below the eavestroughs and rakes. There are two types of soffit panels – solid and vented. The solid panels are designed to provide a seal by protecting the underside of the roof, while the vented panels are designed to allow outside air to enter and circulate throughout the attic. A correctly installed soffit system encompasses an adequate number of vented panels and proper sealing of the closed panels to ensure your home is completely protected from the elements.

Soffits come in different materials, including wood, vinyl and aluminum. At Ontario Certified Roofing, we highly recommend aluminum soffits for your home in Simcoe County, North York Region and North Durham region because of its proven capabilities and durability with our ever-changing climate.

Benefits of Soffits

  • Soffits protect your home from the environmental elements.
  • Soffits provide the necessary ventilation for your roof and attic.
  • Soffits improve the esthetics and curb appeal of the home.
  • Soffits act as a barrier against birds and animals.
  • Soffits work with the eavestroughs and fascia to create a protective seal at the lower edge of the roof.
